MDSA 2008 Events

This is the announcement many of you have been waiting for!!!!!!!!

The MDSA is starting Titling Events in 2008.  The first one will be a video event with a closing date of June 1.

These are the details:
All who enter Titling Events will begin in the Novice Class (single dog).   This class is offered for the first time for the Spring 2008 Video Event.  It will take 2 qualifying events (legs) to earn a Novice Freestyle Dog title. (NFD).  Each event will require new music and new choreography.  Titles are awarded to a dog and handler team.  Only 1 entry in a titling class is allowed for an event.

You may earn legs for the titles at video or live events.  MDSA will offer titles for Standard and Premier as well as Novice classes at a future event.

Many of you may want to join us in the fun of the non-titling, non competitive event such as a Fun Match.  The MDSA still has that for you!  For the June 1 event, we offer the non-regular classes of Rookie (single dog or team) and Veterans (single dog).  The Rookie class is open to MDSA members only. You may also enter a routine in the Novice class and choose to not be scored; you will be able to mark your form as such.

The Entry Form is available in the Files section of the MDSA Discussion List .   The Performance Guidelines are available in the Files section now with a date of March 6, 2008.  Both the Entry Form and Performance Guidelines will also soon be available in the "Publications" section of the MDSA website at : http://www.musicaldogsport.org

A DVD of the teams entering will be sent to all exhibitors. Each performance will be evaluated or scored with the Performance Guidelines providing the basis for the evaluation. The DVD, a thank you to those who entered and a wonderful learning tool, will not be sold.

We invite you to participate in the first MDSA 2008 Video Event for fun and/or a leg on an MDSA Novice title.  Either way, you will help shape the future of our wonderful sport.

The MDSA will also be having a Video Event ending Nov.1.  The details will be announced in the spring.

We are also planning a live Fun Match this year in New England.  Any MDSA
member interested in hosting a Live MDSA Event should contact the MDSA.

Questions about this event are always welcome. Just ask on our Discussion List or email one of the Executive Board members with your questions.

Best of Luck to You All!

MDSA 2007 Winter Update

This has been an eventful Autumn and Winter thus far for the MDSA. We completed the very first MDSA video Fun Match with around 30 entries.  The DVD's will be sent to all participants and the judging will begin very soon.

The MDSA Online Workshop really took off this fall with many freestylers being involved with an assortment of topics. In October and running until the middle of the month Jo Monfort lead the Workshop by answering questions on the topic, "Taping Your Routine". October 15-November 15 the Workshop topic was entitled "Ring Nerves". It was ably handled by Susan Klavon. Carol Ballou and Carolyn Scott took charge of the November 15- December Workshop. The topic was "Creative Heeling and the WOW Factor". If you missed this one, you'd better go to the archives and check it out. It turned out to be a tremendous success. With Carol keeping us all focused on creating the WOW factor, Carolyn, with the help of You Tube, was able to get into her element with "Magic of the Match". It was a record breaking time. The MDSA Online Workshop had more postings in December than ever before, far surpassing any other month. And November's postings
were the second highest ever. Bravo!

The Photo Calendar Contest ended in September. The winners of the contest (in no particular order) are:

Gaye Hamilton & Ryan, Gold Coast, AU

Katie Tracanna & Wiley, Cape Cod, MA

TC Cappel & Shrek, Garland, TX

Reija Puolakkia & Dandy, Finland

Janene Branc & Zeta, Sydney, AU

Jan Weiner & Chip, Sandwich, MA

Barbara Pfohl & Morgan Kaye, Central Point, OR

Sharon Colvin & Chilly, Lake Forest Park, WA

Karen Lewis & Bryce, Santa Fe, NM

Jo Gaebel & Cala, Boxborough, MA

Pam Martin & Spy, Garland, TX

Brooke Stanfield & Cricket, Rowlett, TX

The Executive Board had a drawing from the 12 winners to choose the two prize winners. The lucky ladies that won the drawing were 1. Barbara Pfohl and 2. Karen Lewis. Each won a calendar and the first place winner received her choice of an item from Café Press. Needless to say, they were very happy to be chosen.

The 2008 MDSA Calendar is even bigger and better this year. Each page measures 17" x 11" When hung on wall, it measures 17" x 22". You can see and purchase yours at http://www.cafepress.com/mdsastore

Due to taking on a business venture with some friends, Ann Priddy, who has served as Vice President on the Executive Board since the inception of the MDSA, has found it necessary to resign that post to persue her business. Ann and friends are starting a dog training facility called the "The Critter Cottage". It will take much time and effort to make it successful. We are happy to announce Ann will continue serving the MDSA in the capacity of Executive Board Advisor. We are grateful
that we will still have the availability of Ann's expertise that covers so many areas.

Susanna Pathak, Executive Board member since June 2006, has been appointed by the Executive Board to serve as Vice President (pro tem).

The MDSA Executive Board is pleased to announce that, in December, Katie Tracanna accepted the position of Executive Board member. She has also taken over the membership duties as Membership Coordinator. We are proud and happy to have Katie with us. Katie has also been doing an outstanding job as the Spirit of Sharing Program Coordinator.

Emily Pyle has taken the position of Spotlight Editor. Emily and the Executive Board are always looking for contributions and ideas for the Spotlight. Pam Martin will be assisting Emily in collecting articles, photos, etc. You can contact Emily at emilypyle@sbcglobal.net and Pam Martin at TOPDOGPAM@aol.com .

Our freestyle friend, Reija Puolakka, is in a rehabilitation center in Finland. She is working on recovering from a serious injury sustained in a bicycling accident in August. The MDSA sent her a Holiday Greeting Video DVD. It included photos, written greetings and videos greetings.  She was quite pleased with it.

What's in store for 2008? Judging of the Fall Fun Match along with the "Share Fair"? More Fun Matches? Titling Events? Whatever it is, it will be fun and exciting!

And just in case you haven't renewed your MDSA membership or have yet to join, it is not too late to do so and receive the membership benefits. You may contact Katie at CharlieSamClaus@aol.com if you have any questions about your membership.
